Eriksen to take. Despite the collective groan from the crowd at the prospect of another lacklustre corner, a tantalising cross is whipped across the face of the goal flashing past everyone. It comes to Lamela at the back post and he lashes it in. 2-1, game on.
However, despite a stonewall penalty claim from a Mane foul on Son, there was a feeling that even a point-snatching equaliser wouldn’t paper over the cracks of the poor performance.
There seemed to be a lack of desire, a lack of hunger amongst the players. A feeling that they are still cruising on the adrenaline high of the 3-0 win at Old Trafford. That same feeling resonated after the Watford game where there was a similar profound lack of desire to be found in performance of the majority of players that day.
The same feeling resonated at the club during the summer. Despite the talk of Levy’s tight-pocketedness, I believe that there was a feeling that we didn’t need to sign players. An idea that we could win the league with the current squad. An idea which now looks rather dim-witted.
For all the talents of the current squad, strengthening is still much needed in certain areas. A world class central/defensive midfielder, a top-quality backup striker and a fast, aggressive left back would all be very welcome at Hotspur Way and could push us on from being also-rans to genuine title contenders.
The recent links to Ajax youngster Frenkie de Jong have given Spurs fans excitement at the potential of a top quality midfielder who could dictate a game, and a midfield of the aforementioned Dutchman, Harry Winks and Dele Alli would, I believe, transform us into true title contenders.
At the moment Spurs appear to be on the cusp of greatness, they just need that final touch, that final something, but its almost impossible to put your finger on what exactly that is. A few years ago it was experience. The squad is now experienced. Then it was showing up in big games. The scalps of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United prove that we have the required big match nous.
So, I pose the question what are we lacking? What do we need to go one further? Where do we go from here? Is it transfer investment? Is it a simple question of an exceptional run of form? Or is it a winning mentality?
