Two matches played and six points gained to kick off the 2018/2019 Premier League season, without a single summer signing. Me, as all Spurs fans, would have loved to be introduced to a new face in the Tottenham squad. However, the question I ask myself is, who? What we need is not another attacking option, but stability and routine in the back. Being able to keep a fit and fully committed Toby Alderweireld is just the “signing” we need.
Sure, it would have been exciting to see the likes of Wilfred Zaha, Anthony Martial or even Jack Grealish in lilywhite colours. But what would they have brought to the team except squad-depth? I cannot see anyone of them taking a place in our starting eleven, especially since we are, by the looks of it, not trying to let go of any attacking players. We need someone in the back who can keep everyone switched on throughout an entire match.
Appearing in merely 14 Premier League and 4 Champions League matches last season, it was difficult to understand the impact Toby Alderweireld has on our defensive stability and winning mentality. He went unbeaten with the team in the Champions League last season defeating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at Wembley, APOEL 3-0 in Cyprus, drawing at Santiago Bernabeu against, the soon to become champions, Real Madrid 1-1 and beating them 3-1 at Wembley. Bar, he only played 24 minutes in THE game at Wembley. Like it or not, with a fit Toby Alderweireld, we would not have given away the game against Juventus in only a few minutes.
Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen both had terrific seasons last year and I think it was great for Sanchez to play so many minutes in his first season. This season, with a brilliant Jan Vertonghen, a more experienced Sanchez and a Toby Alderweireld back in-form, we are going to be a hard team to break down. A continually improving Ben Davies and a Kieran Trippier in his World Cup form bombing on down the line, it is going to be a nightmare for any opposition to defend Harry Kane and Dele Alli in the box. Imagine the looks on the Manchester United fans faces when a Toby header wins us the game on Monday.
Up the Spurs!
