Match Preview: Manchester United vs. Tottenham Hotspur

This is the 49th time these two have met in the Premier League, with Manchester United winning 31 times and only losing 6 times. Last season both teams won their home game, with a 1-0 at Old Trafford and a 3-0 at White Hart Lane. In recent years Spurs, have managed to make this fixture more competitive, they went through an eleven-year spell without a win, and it took until 2012 to win at Old Trafford in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho took charge of Manchester United in the summer spending over 100 million in transfers. This is his eighth managerial position and has managed over 870 games with a 65.7-win percentage. He has eight league championships in four different countries making him one of the most successful managers in recent history. He has come up against Pochettino ten times so far, he has 8 wins one draw and one defeat.  His career at Manchester United hasn’t got off to the best start with only five wins in his 1st 14 games in the Premier League. 

Manchester United like to line up in a 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 formation they try to control the game by using possession and short passes. They like to attack using the wings and use Zlatan Ibrahimović aerial power to get the ball forward. Their Aerial success rate is at 58.5% which is the highest in the league, Spurs are 2nd with 56.3%. Manchester United are also top in passing accuracy statistic with 85.1%, Spurs are in 6th with 82.2%. Manchester United are averaging 1.36 goals a game but are conceding on average 1.14 goals a game. They have only managed to score 2 or more goals in four of their 14 games in the Premier League. Spurs line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and are averaging 1.71 goals a game, they have kept 6 clean sheets in their 14 Premier League games. Spurs are yet to field the same line up in back to back games, due to injury or suspension. Several key players have also missed a lot of games, Harry Kane five games, Toby Alderweireld six games, Erik Lamela five games and Mousa Dembele four games. 

Manchester United drew their last game 1-1 away to Everton it was their third 1-1 draw in a row. They only have one win in their last eight Premier League games. This left them in 6th place on 21 points 13 points off the top of the league. Spurs won 5-0 at home to struggling Swansea, it was their biggest win of the season. A brace from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen ensured a comfortable afternoon, added to by a spectacular half volley from Son who described it as “one of his best goals”.  This left them in 5th place on 27 points 8 points behind leaders Chelsea but only 3 points behind fourth placed Manchester City. The win also significantly improved their goal difference now on +14.
