Tottenham Hotspur Youth Update - December 2015

Youth Cup

Spurs started the month with a Youth Cup game at Stevenage against Alliance side Rotherham United. The visitors held Spurs to a single goal lead at half time having a couple of good chances themselves, but were overrun in the second. Spurs opened the scoring when Bennetts was played in by Owens, he hit the post but was able to net the rebound. The second goal came from good work by Stylianides who set up Sterling. The strikers effort was going wide of the far post but was turned in by a defender. Loft replaced Sterling an scored inside four minutes converting Edwards fine ball. The fourth goal was reward for the hard work put in by Shashoua. He long range effort took a deflection on the way. Carter-Vickers was almost unbeatable at the back where the visitors chances came from deadball situations. Spurs could have scored more than the 4-0 scoreline at the end.

Spurs have another home tie in the next round having been drawn to play Middlesbrough.

U-18 League

There was only one game this month due to the academy sending a squad to Florida. The game was at Reading on the 5th and was another game badly affected by the wind. Reading had the better of the first half although Spurs did well including hitting the bar. They were the better in the second half until Reading switched to playing on the deck late in the game.

Spurs finished December in 8th position after mixed results.

Spurs sent an U-19 squad to defend the IMG Cup they won last year in Florida. They beat Baltimore Celtic 3-1 and Jacksonville Armada 8-0 before drawing 0-0 with Toluca to top their group and play Maccabi Haifa for the Cup. They drew 2-2 after extra time before losing 6-5 on penalties to finish as runner ups.

U-21 League

Spurs played Southampton on the 7th at Stevenage and came unstuck in an open game against a side that was just a bit quicker than them. Both sides defended well restricting the number of chances. Southampton scored from a free kick at the end of the first half and added a second in the second.

Spurs second match was away to Everton on the 14th.The game was an end to end game but with both defences on top which made it look like one goal would win it. Everton scored first on a quick counter attack from a Spurs corner. Spurs were level inside two minutes when Sonupe got into the area and was fouled. Townsend scored from the spot to draw 1-1.

Spurs finished December second above Reading on goal difference. 

Premier League U-21 International Cup

Spurs played their third match in this tournament at Stevenage where the opponents were FC Porto B. It was a tough start until Spurs broke through with two goals near the end of the first half. The first goal came when the keeper failed to hold the strike by Onomah and Coulthirst scored from the rebound. Coulthirst got the second in similar circumstances as the keeper pushed out a shot by Amos. In the second half Spurs were in control with Townsend setting up the third for Walkes before Sonupe hit the fourth running on to a through ball from Miller. The 4-0 victory meant Spurs finished top of the group and will meet Chelsea in the next round.
